Bayhealth Milford Memorial Receives National Accreditation for Surgical Weight Loss

Thursday, August 23, 2018 | Surgical Weight Loss
Bayhealth Milford Memorial has been nationally accredited as a Comprehensive Bariatric Surgery Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®). Bayhealth Milford Memorial first received a Comprehensive Center accreditation for surgical weight loss in 2015.

The MBSAQIP is a joint program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). The MBSAQIP Standards, outlined in the Resources for Optimal Care of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Patient 2016, ensure that surgical weight loss patients receive a multidisciplinary program, not just a surgical procedure, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success. Bayhealth’s accredited surgical weight loss center and program offer preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for severely obese patients.

“The team at Milford Memorial does a great job—from our nurse coordinator and nutritionist to our day surgery nurses and operating room nurses and techs to all the staff responsible for postoperative care. The people in all of these areas are well versed in how to take care of the surgical weight loss patient,” said Thomas Barnett, MD, FACS, bariatric surgeon and medical director of bariatric surgery at Bayhealth Milford Memorial. “The American College of Surgeons gave Milford Memorial a three-year accreditation, which is the longest and best accreditation it could have received. My patients also rave about their experience. I’m proud to be the director of this team.”

Bayhealth’s commitment to quality care begins with specially trained staff and surgeons who participate in meetings throughout the year to review patient outcomes. They seek continuous improvement to enhance the program’s structure, process and outcomes. To earn the MBSAQIP designation, Bayhealth Milford Memorial met essential criteria for staffing, training and facility infrastructure and protocols for care, ensuring its ability to support patients with severe obesity.

After submitting an application, centers seeking MBSAQIP accreditation undergo an extensive site visit by an experienced bariatric surgeon, who reviews the center’s structure, process and clinical outcomes data. Working with ASMBS, the ACS expanded its quality program for bariatric surgery centers so that it can assist surgical weight loss patients in identifying those centers that provide optimal surgical care.

Bayhealth’s surgical weight loss program offers individualized attention from highly trained specialists who help patients navigate through the entire process—from initial consultations to lifestyle changes and surgery to support groups. It also offers free informational seminars for potential patients, which cover the basics of weight loss surgery options and what to expect from the program.
